Included in these are the involvement of intensivists and the advancement of the subspecialty of neurocritical treatment; the huge improvements in the resuscitation of individuals with trauma ; myriad developments in the management of traumatic brain injury during prehospital emergency care, emergency department care, and rehabilitation; and marked improvements in monitoring and management methods in the intensive care unit . Such confounding could be addressed only in a randomized rigorously, controlled trial. Here we report the outcomes of such a trial. The principal objective of the Benchmark Evidence from South American Trials: Treatment of Intracranial Pressure trial was to determine if the information derived from the monitoring of intracranial pressure in patients with severe traumatic brain injury improves medical practice and patient outcomes.In the scholarly study, 28 individuals were treated with medical procedures and 28 with immobilization. Dr. Boakye and colleagues compared the brief – and long-term outcomes of the medical and nonsurgical treatment groupings. The two groups were similar with regards to age and other features.
